RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Cardona has served as the lead investigator on more than 50 scientific grants and contracts over the past 15 years. She conducts research on the disease agents of poultry, specifically on the transmission and pathogenesis of viral disease agents. She has a specific interest in disease control and prevention in real world settings and a strong interest in helping people to produce healthy birds. She is an author or co-author of more than 150 scientific publications. Dr. Cardona is currently the BS Pomeroy Chair in Avian Health, maintains an active laboratory in on the St Paul campus of the University of Minnesota, leads and participates in the Secure Food System team and is the Director of the Mid Central Research and Outreach Laboratory in Willmar, Minnesota (link to MCROC site). She is a past recipient of the Minnesota Turkey Grower’s President’s Award (2017), the US Poultry and Egg Association Lamplighter Award (2017), Bruce W. Calnek Achievement Award (2009), the California Poultry Federation Golden Rooster Award (2006), the AAAP New Investigator Award (2003), Poultry Scientist of the Year and the Pacific Egg and Poultry Association (2003).
